Penguin Random House recently sent me an advanced copy of a book called An Audience of One. It’s great. Check out the Notes on it. Thank you, Penguin Random House!

As I was reading it, a quote from Stuart Wilde jumped off the page and grabbed me by my shoulders (flashback to my mom! lol).

Here it is: “Messy surroundings and an untidy life reflect a weakened metaphysical and psychological state. If you are powerful, you will dominate your life, you will find time to clean up and order things, and you will want to do that as a part of your personal discipline. Mess is the external manifestation of the ego’s disquiet and laziness.”

Wow.

Now, I’m a reasonably neat guy but I’m often lazier with the details of keeping things clean than I’d like to be and Alexandra and I have chatted countless times about the correlation between our mental “disquiet” and how that is mirrored by our external environment. (Specifically, our kitchen! Laughing. The more tired/lazy I am mentally at the end of the day, the more likely our kitchen is messy at the start of the next day.)

That passage PERFECTLY captures that observation.

So… I read the quote, marked it all up and made a note to Google it the next time I was online so I could buy the book it came from and soak up its wisdom.

Later that day, Google told me that it’s from a book called Infinite Self—which, of course, I immediately bought. I read it within 24 hours of getting it. It’s fantastic. Check out the Note.

All that to say, today I want to talk about dominating our lives.

Even more specifically, I want to talk about ONE area of your life that could use some dominating as a simple, metaphorical representation of you stepping into the next-best version of yourself.

For me, it’s my kitchen. I hereby proclaim my dominance over you, kitchen. (lol)
